Could not wait to say this -
She is finally here (more)
Thursday, 15 July 1999, at 9:13 a.m.

Jennifer Diane arrived on Sunday, July 11th at 4:07 am
after 34 1/2 hours of labor
(of which 32 hours was spent at home).

I stayed at home until I felt the light urge to push
and that is when DH and I quickly got to the hospital.

Jennifer was borne about 1 hr 45 min after we arrived and
the best part was that I did it without any meds. While I
was home I walked, took warm baths and also used a heating
pad. Now that I look back I would not do anything
differently.

Anyways - enough about me -
Jennifer came 3 weeks early and
she weighed 6 lbs 11 oz and
she is 18 inches long.
Her apgars were 8 and 9.

She is absolutely gorgeous
and did not get the conehead look either.

Good luck to everyone.

Talk to you soon.

Madelyn's very late arrival....
Thu, 19 Aug 1999 16:37:10 -0400

We tried to induce Maddie on her due date (4/7) at 7:00 a.m. and after a full day of lots of contractions - very painful contractions, nothing happened. At 7:30 that night, I was sent home with a baby still in my belly (boy was that hard to explain to my 4 yr old!!) lol

Anyway, I was scheduled to be induced again on April 20 (13 days past my due date). At 1:00 a.m. on the 19th, Maddie decided she wanted to do things her own way!! I had cleaned all evening long, and finally crawled into bed at 11:30 a.m. I was having some pretty weird dreams, mostly because I was scared to go through the induction thing again. In my dream, I was being induced and was having some really good contractions. After a little while, I realized that these were real contractions, I was not just dreaming them!! I woke up DH around 2:00 a.m. telling him that I didn't think Maddie was going to wait until Tuesday and his first reaction was "Oh shit..." Since I was scheduled to be induced on Tuesday, he had lots to do at work and all of our arrangements for the older two girls went out the window!!

I tried to sleep, but the contractions were too painful. So I got up and continued to finish cleaning, pack the older girls suitcases, etc. Around 3:30 a.m. DH and I took a shower and decided to wait a little longer to go to the hospital. I was sooo scared of going to the hospital and them laughing at me saying, "You're not really in labor, go home!" We called my neighbor at 4:30 and she came to stay with the older two and by 5:30 a.m. we were on our way.

We got up to labor and delivery (there was no one else in labor, that was nice) and the nurse checked me to find me 5 cm already! Boy was I in shock! They moved me into a birthing room and got my IV going, etc. My contractions were still coming but didn't seem to be as intense. I had epidurals with my other two daughters and wanted one this time, but looking back that was a mistake. The contractions were bearable, but I was afraid of what they would become so I insisted on having one. The doctor finally got around to giving it to me when I was 8 cm and then my labor totally stopped! UGH! When I got the epidural, I had also had a dose of statol before and I was really out of it. My blood pressure kept dropping and they kept giving me oxygen. That was the strangest feeling. After about an hour, they started me on pitocin to get my contractions going again. Finally, the pitocin kicked in and of course the epidural wore off. So the last hour was really rough. I started pushing at 11:40 a.m. and at 11:51 a.m. Madelyn Elizabeth was born. Lots of dark hair and big! 8 lbs even and 20 inches long. We nursed in the birthing room and she had some problems latching on, but eventually got the hang of it! And it has been going great ever since!! :)

Oh, no I'm sorry I missed Shell's birth story! (SEE SHELL'S STORY BELOW :o}) Congratulations Shell and DH!!

Well, here is an account of our fast and furious ordeal!!

I was to be induced on Thursday, but Daniel decided that was not going to happen. The first contraction that woke me up was at 3:50 AM. I could tell it was different than anything I had felt sofar. I started timing them and they were 10-12 min. apart in the first hour, until 5:00 am. Then Michael woke up and needed me to lay in bed with him. That lasted two contractions and I said to my husband to take my place because I was having contractions and it was uncomfortable. I told him they were not close yet, so I would take a shower at 6:00 and wash my hair, etc. But Paul said: why don't you have your shower now before you are buckling with pain. OK. This was a 5:30. As soon as I hit the shower and started moving around the contractions started to come quicker and quicker and quicker. I felt them mostly in my lower abdomen and rear end. By the time I got out of the shower they must have been a minute apart and the pressure on my behind was just unbelievable!! Like I had to do an mega bowel movement. I told Paul to call his mom and get her overhere right away! I could not walk from one room to another without having a contraction and I was howling with pain. I was going to get my bag in Daniels room when my water literally exploded out of me. I went to the wasroom, more contractions, the pressure on my behind was greater then ever. I was afraid I was going to have the baby then and there, and there was nothing I could do to stop it. I yelled at Paul to call 911 that I was not going to make it, I had to push, I could not stop it. He said he would take me himself, quicker! He put a poloshirt on me, a robe and my slippers (no time for jeans). We put Michael in the car, but Paul's Mom just arrived in time. She took Michael. I was still howling and screaming (probably woke up the whole street). We left the house at 6:20. We got to an Emergency entrance (the wrong one appeared later) and a paramedic (an ambulance attendant who happened to be sitting there) got me in a wheel chair and took me up to the 3rd floor to labour and delivery. I screamed the whole way (it was like a movie). In the elevator I said to the guy: "You have no idea what this is like!!! The pressure is too much!!! Whaaaa, whaaa). He wheeled me straight into a delivery room:

me in my robe and soaking towels under my butt. I yelled at the nurse (these are such wonderful, calm and gentle beings) "the pressure, the pressure, ishis, tohoo, muhuch!!). She said in a calm voice: Well yes, you are sitting on the baby's head, why don't you lay down here, that baby wants to come out! I lay down on the table (screaming harder then ever), the doctor came, I got to push, 6 minutes later, all of Daniel was born! They clocked me in at 0630 and he was born at 0636!! I remember the nurse saying to me: now we don't mind you screaming, but it is better if you did not and concentrated on pushing!! (Ofcourse, she was right!) That stopped me a bit, LOL. I had a half inch episiotomy, which today does not feel half bad.

Daniel weighed in at 9lbs 14oz !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Apgar scores 9's. A big healthy baby boy!!

In retrospect I am glad it went so fast, it not nearly as draining a a full day of labour (or more) but it also scared the heck out of me thinking I could have had him at home or in the car! That feeling of enormous pressure in my behind will be with me for a while, it was scary.

But everything is wonderful now. We are at home. The BF seems to be going OK and I hope we will make that work. Daniel is sleeping peacefully in his carseat beside me here. I am tired, ofcourse, but also ecstatic!! I have all kinds of appointments with a lactation consultant, health nurse and the pediatrician lined up in the next few days, so great follow-up.

Anyway, let me stop here, before I start rambling. This was our story, we will be talking about it for a long time to come! They say second babies usually come faster, yeah right!!

We are all doing great though and that is what counts!!

We got to the hospital at 8 am Saturday morning...I woke up around 3:00 am with contractions that were about 5 minutes apart. We didn't know if they'd keep us or not. When we got there I was 2 cm and 70% effaced. The contractions were around 5 minutes apart still. They hooked us up to a monitor for 15 minutes and then had us walk the halls for 45 minutes. By then I was 3 cm and 100% effaced! They told me I was a keeper! The walking was moving things along, so they told us to walk again for 45 minutes. This sped the contractions up to around 2 minutes apart. And they got to the point where I had to stop walking each time one happened. By noon I was around 3 1/2 cm and my water broke! I thought it was going pretty fast and after my water broke that it would only speed up! The contractions were fairly painful now. I took a shower, which felt wonderful! At this point the nurse recommended demerol for the pain. She said it would last about an hour and relax me. Then I could get up again if I wanted. Well...the demerol did NOTHING for the pain! While I was back on the monitor, they noticed that with almost each contraction the baby's heart rate would decrease. It wasn't really a big deal at this point, but they wanted to keep me hooked up on the monitor. Unfortunately, I also stopped progressing! The contractions felt worse, but I was still barely 4 cm at 2:00! And I really wanted an epidural, but they wouldn't give me one until I was 4 - 5 cm! The Dr thought maybe replacing some amniotic fluids would help with the baby's heartrate, so they ran a saline solution "up there"! Very messy! Every time I moved it would squirt out! They also hooked up an internal fetal heartrate monitor. They had me keep switching from my left side, to my back to my right side to see if it would help and it really didn't make a difference. Then they wanted me to have an oxygen mask to get more oxygen to the baby. That was annoying! By 6:00 I was still only 4 cm. They tried pitocin off and on during the day, but that made the heartrate drop more with each contraction! And the contractions were even more painful with the pitocin! They also wouldn't let me drink anything, not even ice chips! I was really thirsty from all that breathing -- which didn't help with the pain if you ask me! Finally they agreed to give me the epidural -- which only worked on my left side! I could still feel every contraction on the right! Ouch! At 7:00, after 16 hours of contractions, the Dr came in and said he wanted to discuss a c-section. I was thrilled! I said there's nothing to discuss -- do it as soon as possible! So, they prepped me, and I got a spinal, so finally I couldn't feel any pain! I was in the O.R. by 8:00 pm and they brought DH in. The surgery was painless -- it was actually very exciting, especially after the long day! At 8:18 they told us we had a healthy, big boy! They showed him to me and DH. He was adorible! Then they took him to the nursery to be weighed and everything. DH got to go with him and tell our very anxious families who had been waiting all day! It only took about 30 minutes to finish me up and get me back to my room. I got to see my family for a few minutes and then they brought me Alex. I got to breastfeed him then and it went very well! He latched right on!

We came home from the hospital yesterday and everything is going wonderfully! I didn't mind having the c-section at all, although I'm a little less mobile than I'd hoped I be, but it's a small price to pay!

My milk came in yesterday and he's breastfeeding very well!

I guess that's about it --

Great Birth Story....(m) Long

Thursday, 19 August 1999, at 7:14 a.m.

My friend that was due on Sept 17th gave birth to a little girl 5lbs 1 oz on my birthday Aug 16th. She was one month early. She had been feeling a little contractions but just wrote them off as Braxton Hicks & did everything normal when she went to dr. Mid wife told her that she was 2 cm. Dialiated & she said as soon as the dr. come she will give her something to stop the contractions, she felt no pain infact she didn't even now that she was in labor. the Dr. came & she had dailated 3 more cm. So she was going to have this baby, they had to find her DH & she kept saying that she wasn't ready yet well she said she felt no pain & 1 hour later without any drugs or anything she gave birth to Samantha. Who is very healthy & going home today, Isn't that great no drugs easy birth & a healthy little baby, Gosh I hope my birth story is that good. Also being pG she really didn't gain any weight except for the baby. Gosh what luck she had. I just wanted to share that great story out there. The only thing Dr. told her was that the baby in the last month learns to suck so she might have a little trouble breast feeding, But everything is going fine so far.

I hope everyone is doing well. On monday for my birthday my Dh gave me two spa Gift Cert. One before the baby & one after & they both include 1 hr. massage facial pedicure & manicure. I can't wai to make the app. My last day at work is Oct 1st. I wish it was today. Stress here is driving me CRAZY. but I changed my hours to 7am- 3:30.

Miss you girls, Take Care Jennifer W

He is Finally Here!!!!!

8 pounds 7 ounces
20 inches long

I had two goals for this pregnancy. The first, to carry this baby to full term (my first was born 2.5 years ago at 26 weeks) and second, to hold this baby right after it is born. Well my doctors set out to help me achieve these goals.

My high risk pregnancy was filled with weekly O/B visits, u/s & cervical checks due to a history incompetent cervix and preterm labor. Around 24 weeks my cervix started thinning (effacing) and dilating and that is when the FUN started!!! I was put on Nifedipine (a medication to control labor) for 12 weeks and placed on bedrest for 11 weeks ~ 3.5 weeks of which were spent in the hospital. While in the hospital I made a trip up to Labor & Delivery at 27 weeks because "a little some ones" foot was caught in my cervix which caused me to go into labor resulting in 3 days on Magnesium Sulfate. The last few weeks of my pregnancy I was having contractions all the time, some times consistently and some times not!!!! How frustrating!!! But you know after all that I can truly say I loved being pregnant!!!!!

On June 8th I had a regular check up with my regular doctor, Dr. Melius. I was at 38w5d and psychologically ready to have this baby. I had been 90% effaced and 3 cm dilated for weeks. All my doctors kept telling me that bedrest grows big babies and I was afraid of a 10 pounder!! If it took getting down on my hands and knees to have my doctor help me along, I was ready to do that. I even took DH with me for back up. Well the first thing he said when he entered the room was "Let’s break your water tomorrow! It’s a good day for a birthday!! " He was as excited as a 6 year old at Christmas!!! I couldn’t believe that I was going to have this baby tomorrow!!! Before I left the clinic I was

told to call Labor and Delivery at 7:30 am to see when they wanted me to come in.

Well the next day, June 9th (38w6d), at 4:00 am I woke up with a funny cracking feeling in my cervix. I thought my water broke but it didn’t. I then noticed that I was having contractions and they were 2 minutes apart. I decided to take a shower to see if it was false labor, again. It was the real thing. By the time we got to the hospital, around 5:45 am, my contractions were one on top of another. I had dilated to 6 cm. I decided to get some numorphine to take the edge off of the contractions and it helped immensely!! Hard labor lasted for about 2 hours. At 8:00 I was fully dilated and effaced and could start pushing!!! After 1.5 hours of extremely painful pushing Ryan made his entrance into the world. When his head crowned Dr. Melius said, "Colleen, his head is crowning. Bend down and touch it!" Yeah right!!! All I wanted is to get him out. When his head popped out my doctor again said, , "His head is there. Bend down and touch it!" Now come on… get him out!!!! After his shoulders were delivered my doctor said, "Colleen, bend down and pick up your baby!" I knew this was the only way I was going to stop my pain, so at 9:01am I lift him out and place him on my belly. It was the greatest feeling!!! Ryan was so calm and just looked up into my eyes and I knew at that moment everything I went through during my pregnancy was well worth it!!!! He was beautiful!!!! He weighed 8 pounds 7 ounces and was 20 inches long.

It seemed like it took forever but all this took place within a few minutes and my doctor was the greatest!! He told me that he wasn’t going to give me an episiotomy or let me tear and he was right. He had me push very slowly and stop as Ryan was immerging so I would stretch, not tear. I had only a very slight tear that wasn’t even worth a stitch.

Dr. Melius is excited that he now has me "figured out" and wants me to have another baby. I say fat chance!!! My two goals have been achieved ~~ I have my full term baby and I got to hold him for an hour right after he was born!!! I don’t have to have another baby to prove he "figured me out"…. I have Ryan here to prove it!!!

Michele did it!
Last night at 10:05 p.m, Emily Margaret Barnes was born.
She measured 20" long and 10 lbs. and 3-1/2 ozs.
She is huge next to the other babies in the nursery.

Michele is doing good. She is a little sore, but resting comfortably. We went to the hospital about 6:30 in the morning yesterday. She had a pretty hard labor. She had an epidural which did wonders for about four hours. Once the baby's head down into the pelvis, she started to have pretty intense back labor and the epidural wasn't doing the job. So the anesthesiologist gave her a little boost of fentenyl and that made her more comfortable. The doctor thought a c-sec was likely, because she was dilating very slowly, but she went from 6-10cm really fast. So we started pushing and the rest as they say is history. It was amazing, and so was Michele.

I want to thank each one of you for the support that you have given my wife through her miscarriage, as well as her pregnancy.

Thank you. Brock

IT'S A GIRL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! finally, the details....m

Posted By: Meg, aka Madeleine's Mommy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Saturday, 14 August 1999, at 3:58 p.m.

Well, she finally arrived - 9 days late!

I posted Tuesday night that the contractions had started, and sure enough, they were the real thing. I had my first contractions around 7:30 pm - they were similar the BH, except they started hurting. Not super painful, but I couldn't ignore it. When I started timing they were around 7 mins apart. I had been having lots of BH's all day, and some that felt differernt - hard to explain, but instead of across the belly area, more up and down, and pressure and tightening in the pelvis. By midnight they were about 5 mins apart (some closer - 4 mins), so we called the dr (the replacement - mine was on holidays) and she said to go to the hospital when they were 3-5 mins apart. We waited until 2:00 am, then went in. DH was sure that we would be sent home, because he thought almost every woman had some sort of false labour or something - I guess a lot of his friends had told him that. But, the nurse checked me and said "you're having a baby this morning". We were both like 'wow, this is really it' - although I wasn't surprised because by this time I was in pain! Unfortunately I was only 3 cms. I almost died, but the RN said I was 100% effaced, so the dilation didn't necessarily mean it would go slow. ha! By 3:00 am I was really wimpering for pain meds, and they finally got the ok from the dr to give me morphine, so they did. At that point the worst of it was in my back - I felt like thats were the baby was coming from! No position made me comfortable, and I was getting so edgy I couldn't focus on breathing, etc. The morphine took the edge off, but did not take away the pain entirely - it helped me to relax. Also, I sat in the shower for a long time, using the hot water to relax my belly. I highly recommend that (don't forget a shower cap!). The morphine started wearing off around 5:00 am, and was gone by about 6:30 - I started losing it around 5:30 am. I started crying - I felt like such a wimp, I really felt like I wasn't handling it well at all. The nurse checked and I was only 4 cm - I almost died. I started asking about an epidural (wasn't sure I wanted one, but wanted to know the dr's opiniiion), so they had to contact the dr. again - which took a while. At 7:30 the RN's changed shifts, and I got the best nurse - one in training actually. She really helped me, and showed me how to use the gas properly for pain. I had been only inhaling a couple of breaths when the contraction was really bad, but the key (remember this guys!) is to inhlae deeply at the first sign of a contraction, then exhale in the mask, and continue until the whole contraction is over. It quite honestly doesn't do a lot for the pain, but helps you to relax (my first whiff made me giddy!), and I used it to help myself focus on breathing. Anyway, I never did get the epi. The dr. came in about 10 am, said I was about 7-8 cms, and it wouldn't be too long. At this point I didn't want the epi - I was afraid it would slow thing down, like the mrophine did. And actually, the pain had moved out of my back so I could handle it. When I finally started pushing (around 11:30 - 12:00 I think), the baby's heart rate was dropping, so they put in an electronic monitoring (the kind they screw in to the scalp of the baby - sounds awful, but it didn't even leave a mark!). The rate was dropping, so soon they're putting oxygen on me, and then the doctor is telling me that she's going to use vacuum extraction to help speed things along. After a few harsh pushes she said she wanted to do an episiotomy, as this would speed thing up too. At that point, anything that would "speed things up" sounded good. I didn't realize it - I was so exhausted and delirious by that time - but they were really concerned about the baby. The heart rate was going from about the 130 - 140's to about 70 when I was pushing. DH didn't tell me that at the time (he told me later), he was only telling me when the heart beat was faster. When the baby's head finally came out, (at 1:00 pm Wednesday) it turned out that the cord was wrapped around her neck - thats what the problem had been. Luckily, it slipped off easily and there was no problem. I though DH was going to die when he saw that! When she was finally out, they put her on my tummy, and I couldn't believe it was girl! I thought for sure it was a boy, but DH insisted it was a girl. So, he was right. We were so thrilled - she was a healthy 6 lb, 6 oz baby girl, 20 inches long. It took us a day to decide on her name, but it is Madeleine Anita. (although I'm still debating on the spelling - Madeline or Madeleine, LOL!) We got home from the hospital yesterday - it's quite an adjustment both physically and emotionally. I get so overwhelmed sometimes just thinking and looking at her - I've actually seen her whole life flash in front of my eyes (or at least all the things I want for her). (Like the London Life commercials!) She's a bit jaundiced, so I'm a bit concerned about that. The Public Health Nurse is coming by tomorrow, and then I see the dr. on Tuesday, so I'm happy about all that support. Well, I think I could keep going - write a book the length of War and Peace, I'm sure - but that's the gist of it. I truly feel that she is the most precious gift I could ever get - I thank God for her every day. (OK, now I'm crying again!)

Take care all,
Meg
